Coach in Residence
Build Leadership Capability.
Strengthen Succession Readiness. Sustain High Performance.
John Buchanan’s Coach in Residence program helps organisations strengthen leadership capability, improve business performance and build succession readiness from within.Rather than relying solely on external training or one-off leadership programs, John works alongside executives, emerging leaders and teams inside the organisation - helping them develop the skills, systems, behaviours and coaching capability required for sustainable high performance. The objective is not simply to improve performance today. It is to build an organisation that is better prepared for tomorrow’s leadership challenges, transitions and succession needs. The Coach in Residence program is designed to improve organisational performance by helping individuals, leaders and teams define what their best performance looks like and develop the capability to achieve it consistently. A measurable improvement in performance is an important outcome. But the deeper goal is to help leaders and teams make better use of the resources they already have - including time, talent, skills, data, relationships and investment, while developing new organisational capabilities.
One of the most important of these is high-performance coaching. Coaching has always been an essential part of the leadership toolkit. Today, it is even more important.
Effective coaching requires leaders to understand their people, build strong relationships, create accountability and develop capability in others. This allows organisations to move beyond dependence on individual leaders and create a stronger pipeline of people capable of stepping up when opportunities, growth or leadership transitions occur. That is the foundation of succession readiness.About the Coach in Residence Program
A succession plan identifies who might fill an important role in the future. Succession readiness asks a more important question: are they ready to perform?John Buchanan works with organisations to turn succession planning into practical leadership development. Through coaching, observation, accountability, capability development and real-world application, emerging and existing leaders are given opportunities to build the behaviours and skills required before a transition occurs. The result is a stronger leadership pipeline, greater organisational resilience and less reliance on individual people. From Succession Planning to Succession Readiness

Building Succession Capability From Within
Succession readiness cannot be created by a document alone. It requires organisations to identify potential, develop capability, transfer knowledge and give people opportunities to perform before critical leadership transitions occur. The Coach in Residence model supports this by embedding coaching and leadership development into everyday work.John works with executive leaders and teams to:identify and develop emerging leadership capabilitystrengthen executive and leadership performanceprepare people for greater responsibilitydevelop coaching capability within leadersimprove knowledge and capability transferbuild accountability and performance disciplinesreduce key-person dependencystrengthen leadership pipelinessupport planned leadership transitionscreate a sustainable high-performance culture
Why John Buchanan?
John Buchanan brings a high-performance coaching perspective developed through decades of working with elite teams, leaders and organisations.
His approach focuses on a simple but demanding question:Within succession readiness, that means looking beyond who might occupy a role next and focusing on whether the organisation is actively developing people who are capable, confident and prepared to perform when their opportunity arrives. The aim is to leave the organisation with stronger leaders, stronger internal coaching capability and a more sustainable approach to performance. If better is possible, what needs to change to achieve it?
Having names on a succession plan is not the same as having leaders ready to step up. The John Buchanan Coach in Residence program helps organisations turn leadership potential into leadership readiness, while improving performance today. Build the leaders you need next, before you need them.Is Your Organisation Succession Ready?
