The Coaching Process

The world’s greatest teams such as the All Blacks, Manchester United, New York Yankees, and the world’s greatest athletes such as Rodger Federer, the Williams sisters, Tiger Woods, Usain Bolt and so on all have coaches. Each in their own right has extreme talent, but still requires the coaching process to bring out the best in them, and to help sustain high performance.

The CEO or the business team which aims to not only be the best in their market place, but also aim to dominate that market place for the long term are no different from the sporting legends. The leader and the organisation need to embrace a coaching process which supports the achievement of similar high performance results, year in, year out.

During my time as Head Coach of a number of teams, some successful such as the Australian Cricket team (8 years), the Queensland Bulls (5 years), and some less successful Middlesex CCC (1 season), Kolkata Knight Riders (2 seasons), I have become very clear on a coaching process that achieves high performance results.

The coaching process involves a 10 step approach, and while the steps are listed somewhat chronologically, a high performance coaching approach demands flexibility and responsiveness to the demands of the situation and individuals. I have listed these below –

  1. PHILOSOPHY AND PRINCIPLES
  2. KNOW YOURSELF, ACCEPT YOURSELF LOVE YOURSELF
  3. ALWAYS LOOK TO CHANGE THE GAME
  4. PROCESS OVER RESULT
  5. BE THE PUPPETEER
  6. LEADERSHIP IS IN EVERYONE
  7. PUT EGO IN THE BACK POCKET
  8. DEAL ONLY IN CONTROLLABLES
  9. BE SERVANT……….NOT EXPERT
  10. PRESSURE IS A MYTH
  11. LIMITATIONS, YES…LIMITS, NO
  12. CELEBRATE SUCCES
  13. CHALLENGE THE NUMBERS..NEW MEASURES
  14. FAILURE IS NOT A WORD IN MY DICTIONARY
  15. TAKE PEOPLE WHERE THEY HAVEN’T BEEN
  16. GET THE RIGHT PEOPLE
  17. THE TEAM AND FAMILY
  18. YOUR STRENGTH IS YOUR WEAKNESS
  19. EVERY CLOUD HAS A SILVER LINING
  20. ALWAYS SEEK DIFFERENCE
