Coaching is about people, relationships and the environment that is provided for the individual and the group or team to grow. He, she, they grow by being stretched; by being taken somewhere where they have never been before.

The coach needs to be someone who has a clear picture of where they are going and how they are going to get there; while at the same time cognizant of the fact that they do not exert total control over those who will make the dreams reality.

Hence the mentor coach role is to fill in the spaces between the lines; to convert the theory into practice; to utilize experience as a key tool of education; and to allow the person being coached to be themselves, yet act as an ever present conscience.

An example of this is John in a mentoring role with Stephen Waugh and Ricky Ponting. They were the captains of their teams – John was there to guide and challenge them, encourage their vision, their leadership, their team management and their personal lives.

John was not the expert in terms of cricket, as his record would testify; but he provided that extra dimension for them in their changing and evolving roles as captain.

John applies the same principle in all mentoring.
